Zambia is a land locked country in central Africa sharing some of its borders with the Democratic Republic of Congo, Botswana and Zimbabwe. Zambia's primary industry is mining, with many large multinational mining corporations operating in the northern Copperbelt province. HIV/AIDS continues to be a huge health issue accounting for ~10% of deaths within Zambia far exceeding any other causes listed in the top 10 causes of death (World Health Organization). Zambia is recognised as one of the world's poorest countries ranked 165th of 177 on the Human Development Index (http://www.wfp.org/countries/zambia ). Around 60% of the population live on or below $1.25 per day with approximately 80% of the population below the poverty line. In terms of education, there are many Government and private schools, however, enrolment costs for private schools are well beyond the reach of most Zambians. Even though there may be no enrollment costs for the Government schools, the price of books and educational resources, uniforms and even transport to school dramatically lower the possibility of even a basic education for many Zambians. Resourcing within Government schools is also a huge issue as many classes are grossly overpopulated. A class with a single teacher can often be as large as 70 children! Literacy rates in rural and low socio economic areas is frightentingly low. Educational opportunities beyond high school are rather limited in Zambia. There are few schools offering higher education and most Zambians cannot afford the fees (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Education_in_Zambia). |
